Cast - Abhishek Bachhan Sonam Kapoor
Director - Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Rakeysh carries on his tradition of making movies with out of the box concept, First was AKS, then Rang de basanti and now Delhi 6. Movie based in the interiors of Delhi shows a American Guy (Abhi) coming down to India (Delhi) with his Dadi. Then movie goes from situation to situation, most of it showing the narrow minded society, Indian beliefs, Unnecessary superstitions.
Hard to believe we also see in the movie a waste collector who is a schedule caste and cannot be touched. Once again a movie touches India' most sensitive topic - Hindu - Muslim tiffs. Though the reason shown for the sudden tiff dint make that much of sense. In all these society crisis we also have a love story booming of Roshan (Abhi) & Bittu (Sonam). Thanks God it was not throughout the movie they were singing love songs and No lovey dovey dialogues. A very suttle Love Angle i must say. Ofcouse we have a villain Father (Om Puri) who wants to get his daughter (Sonam) married as soon as possible, but bittu wants to become an INDIAN IDOL (can you beat that), And YES we also see her auditioning for the same, i am very disappointed that we dint hear Anu MAlik's and Javed saab's comments on her.
Delhi 6 has a very abrupt ending or we may call it a weird ending. A movie with a very strong social message. Every thing that was shown made sense, but it just went a bit hard way. May be we have very high expectations from Rakeysh after Rang de Basanti.
A R Rahman rocks once again. All the songs are mind blowing, and also blends very well in the movie and most of them are taken in the background. Prasoon Joshi's Lyrics were very strong and blended so well with the movie and situation and it was better they were not lip sung. Masakali, Delhi 6, Arziyan, Rehna tu, Genda Phool, all were brilliant numbers. The picturisation and cinematography were simply amazing, Specially if you see the masjid scene with Arziyaan in background, its truly is mesmerising. I am sure Delhiets are going to love watching their city.
If we talk about the performances, Abhi (Not too good, but suited the role, Fake accent) Sonam (utterly butterly CUTE), waheda rahman (cold performance), Om puri (could have been strong), Rishi Kapoor (I adore him, but short role and not performance oriented) Vijay Raaz (bang on).
All in all a mediocre film, Rakeysh couldn't pull the magic. Music is a very strong aspect of the movie.
RATING - **1/2
